Our Approach
At KIPP Academy Lynn (KAL), we follow the national KIPP model featured on 60 Minutes. Our program is structured around the following elements:

More Time
Excellent Teaching
Positive Reinforcement
Fun
Outdoor Education Readiness Program
KIPP Through College
Family Engagement and Adult Education

KAL students attend 50% more school than their public school peers, which is 6 years of school in 4 years.

This additional time allows not only more time for academics but also for building relationships and strong bonds between teachers, parents, and students. No one is forced to participate in KAL; everyone chooses to be here.

MORE TIME by the numbers:

7am to 5pm                  regular school day
3 weeks                       of summer classes
2 hours                        of homework every night
98% average               daily attendance rate
99% of students          return for the following year

Our teachers' dedication goes beyond the classroom.
Our teachers are committed, both to their students and to themselves as professionals.

Our Teachers:

visit students and their families in their homes at the beginning of the year to discuss each child’s goals

are available by phone until 9pm every weeknight for homework support

sign a Commitment to Excellence agreement with each student’s family to ensure joint accountability for every student’s success.

teach electives such as Tae Kwon Do, Step Team and Knitting, which enable them to build even stronger relationships with students.

engage in a culture of continuous professional development, self-evaluation, and peer feedback.

"No Excuses. No Shortcuts."
Positive reinforcement and an Ethos of Earning are the core of our methodology. Everything at KIPP is earned, from recess to electives to class trips.

Each student receives a weekly progress report based on achieving goals, completing homework, behaving well, and helping the community.

We call these reports “paychecks,” to reinforce the idea that rewards directly correlate to students work and effort. Students rely on paychecks to earn trips and other rewards i.e. recess, electives, and KIPP apparel.

Trips include visits to historic, cultural, athletic, and fun sites around New England, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Project Adventure, Plimouth Plantation, the Massachusetts State House, and the Federal Reserve Bank, 6 flags, and more.

KAL believes that engaged students learn more.
We incorporate movement, song, chants, and experiential learning into our daily curriculum. Our students:

…learn about our ecosystem on a trip to the Lynn shore
…build character traits when hiking in Utah, and team skills while camping in Maine
…learn about American history when they visit the Statue of Liberty, and government while standing on the steps of the Nation’s Capital.

We also encourage an ongoing culture of joy and celebration at weekly "Songfest," where students sing, dance, and celebrate, the achievements of the week and give "shout-outs" to those who have done well or pushed themselves.

KIPP-sters who have earned it participate in trips to places far removed from the day-to-day life of Lynn and offer them views of the world they would most likely not encounter otherwise.

5th Grade: Washington DC
Students get a real-life glimpse into American politics and visit sites of historical interest.

6th Grade: Utah
Students spend a week in the wilderness where they camp, make all of their own meals, and hike in Bryce and Zion Canyons while engaging in a hands-on extension of their earth science and geology curriculum.

7th Grade: New York City
Students continue their studies in American arts, culture, and history as well as tour top-ranked private high schools and universities.

8th Grade: West Virginia & The Smokey Mountains
Students continue their studies in American arts, culture, and history as well as tour private high schools and universities.

We help students climb the mountain to and through college.

Our student classrooms are named after colleges, and grade levels are identified by the year they will matriculate to college (i.e. this year's 5th grade is the Class of 2018).

Every student in every grade visits at least two university campuses each year.

High School Options:

In the past, about half of our 8th graders have earned partial scholarships to attend independent or private college preparatory high schools. There are currently one or more KAL alumni attending the following schools: Malden Catholic, St. Mary's, St. John's Prep, Phillips Academy Andover, and Pingree School. We have also provided additional earned scholarships to our alumni to supplement the generosity of our school partners. Starting in school year 2011-12, the majority of our 8th graders will continue on to the KAL Collegiate High School.

I'd like to help send a KIPP-ster to high school.

For KAL alumni who return to Lynn Public High School, we offer the CHAMPS program (Choosing to Honor and Achieve My Potential for Success).
For more information on our CHAMPS program click here.

CHAMPS offers:
Individual learning assessments
Tutoring
Supplemental assignments
A stipend and weekly work hours
College admission assistance

KAL believes that we have a responsibility to not only educate our children, but also to provide a community of learning for our families.
We provide evening adult education classes and workshops to KAL parents and to adults in the Lynn community. We are open three nights a week until 9:30pm during the week. Courses offered include Citizenship, English, and Computer Literacy. KAL also facilitates additional workshops on the weekends, such as parenting skills, personal finance and job interviewing.
