KEEPING OUR PROMISE!

KIPPsters in class

Last Tuition Dollars

  • There is NOTHING more important than keeping our promise that every KIPPster will go to college.

  • There is NOTHING more important than continuing our student's education by attending a college preparatory high school where more than 80% of students graduate from college.

Most KIPPsters have received partial scholarships but we urgently need your help with "Last Tuition Dollars."

A generous donor has challenged all KIPP supporters with a $25,000 "Last Tuition Dollars" challenge. If 10 people receiving this newsletter donate $2500 each, our KIPPsters will have $50,000 to continue 'climbing the mountain' to college.

Please choose to gather 5 friends to donate $500 each to support one KIPPster for one year of college prep high school, donate $2,500 for one year, or fund a four year college prep high school education at $10,000. The student you support will meet with you, keep you updated on their education, and honor you for fostering their life time of success.

Please contact Nancy Sarles at 781.592.1937 or nsarles@kipplynn.org with your matching donations today.

KIPP Principal Josh Zoia
recently served on Governor Patrick's Readiness Project, a statewide initiative involving over 200 educators, business leaders, and community leaders. The members are leading the development of a 10-year strategic plan for the future of education in the Commonwealth, including consideration of some fundamental and systemic challenges that face public education in Massachusetts.

The goal of this project is to create a comprehensive, child-centered public education system that begins before kindergarten, continues through grade 12 and higher education, and extends through work force development and lifelong learning to ensure that each individual has the opportunity to achieve his or her full potential.

The mission of KIPP Academy Lynn is to provide an environment of strict discipline, high expectations, commitment, longer school days and fun to engage the educationally underserved, diverse population of students of Lynn and develop their academic skills, intellectual habits, and character traits necessary to maximize their potential in high school, college, and the world beyond.

KIPP Success Revealed in Test Results

The KIPP culture of hard work and success includes attending school for almost 50 hours a week, Saturdays, and summers as well as completing two hours of homework every night.  KIPPsters adhere to a code of high expectations, strict discipline, and exceptional behavior because of the promise that going to college will define their lives.

Outstanding teachers are in school for ten hours a day and then available by cell phone until 10PM every night. Each day is filled with exciting lessons, the satisfaction of mastering difficult subject matter, rewards for being the best person they can be, and lots of fun.

The KIPP Report Card:

Our current 8th graders prove that the KIPP culture of academic excellence and fun is working.

Math:

As 5th graders, only 22% tested proficient or better, lower than the state and Lynn Public Schools. In amazing growth, as 6th graders, 72% of these students scored proficient or better in Math.

By 7th grade, 68% of KIPPsters were proficient or better in Math!

English Language Arts:

As 5th graders, only 38% of KIPPsters scored proficient or better. By 7th grade these KIPPsters soared as 83% scored proficient or better. Simply remarkable!

Across the State:

When compared to 65 schools across Massachusetts with similar ethnic and social-economic mix and urban districts, KIPP Academy Lynn students had the highest scores of proficiency in math and at 96% in English Language Arts!

Success is possible because of KIPP 's extraordinary teachers and your support.

Thank you!

Jefell

Student Spotlight:

Jefell Campos

When 8th grader Jefell Campos moved with his family to Lynn from a crime ridden area in South Bronx, he did not expect the drastic changes he was about to experience. While attending the Boy's and Girls club in Lynn, his parents found out about the opportunities that KIPP Academy Lynn offered and enrolled him in the first class of 5th graders.

Jefell was not enthused to be in school for 10 hours a day and lose his old friends.  He reflected recently that some of those old friends were involved in recent shootings in Lynn and he said, "If it wasn't for KIPP, I would have been involved in that myself."

Jefell found caring teachers, interesting subjects, amazing earned trips, and opportunities to grow as an athlete.

Jefell has many new perspectives now. "When I was backpacking in Utah, I learned that I could push myself through limits. Now I know that if I work hard, good things will happen." He enjoys history and debating thoughtfully on political and moral topics. "My teacher, Mr. Brown, connects history to present day America. We have facts and knowledge about topics for thoughtful discussion and opinions," stated Jefell.

Jefell's long term career goal is to get a degree in business, earn his PhD and become a professor of history at UCLA or Harvard. However, his immediate future will be attending college prep Malden Catholic High School on a partial scholarship.

(Note: Jefell is available for any manual labor this summer on the North Shore to help him pay for his high school education.)

Volunteer Spotlight:

Jackie Polimeni

Jackie Polimeni, a 6th grade math volunteer for two years, helps KIPPsters with jackie phomework in problem solving. Jackie brings her wonderful smile and adult friendship to those students who need a boost. As a former teacher, Jackie enjoys being around kids. "The environment at KIPP really motivates the kids and the kids make the school an exciting place. I think I get as much out of the experience as they do getting help. I encourage others to do the same because it feels so good" stated Jackie.  The 6th grade math teacher, Carrie Fitzgerald, explained "Her presence allows me to work with other students and brings another caring person into the student's world. Jackie is a great asset to our program."
