School Leadership

Mr. Zoia is the founder and Executive Director of KIPP Academy Lynn. Mr. Zoia grew up in Marblehead and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. After living on a sailboat for a year and traveling the world, he joined Teach for America, where he taught 4th grade in a South Bronx Elementary school for two years. Mr. Zoia then discovered KIPP Bronx where he taught 6th grade science and history for four years. While at KIPP Bronx, he was inspired by what was possible in education. Mr. Zoia was selected as a KIPP Leadership Fellow and trained to bring KIPP back home. Josh lives in Lynn, MA with his wife Pat and his two children, Jabali and Maya. For school year 2011-2012, Zoia will serve as Co Executive Director of the organization alongside Caleb Dolan, after which Zoia will move to New York to be closer to extended family, and Dolan will take over as Executive Director.

Caleb Dolan has been an integral part of the KIPP network since 2001, when he founded KIPP Gaston College Preparatory (GCP), in North Carolina. Under Dolan’s leadership for eight years, the school’s first three graduating classes earned 100% college acceptance. Since Caleb joined us in 2009, he has served a dual role as Chief Academic Officer for KIPP Academy Lynn and Director of Principal Development for the KIPP Foundation, where he has helped many teachers and leaders hone their craft. He has helped build and refine the extensive professional development program at KAL. For the 2011-2012 school year, Dolan will serve as Co-Executive Director of KIPP Massachusetts alongside Josh Zoia, after which Zoia will move to New York to be closer to his extended family. Beginning in 2012-2013, Dolan will take over as Executive Director of KIPP Massachusetts, so he may help lead the organization to realize its growth plans. Dolan lives in Roslindale, MA with his wife Joanna and daughter Tallulah.

Mr. Kalafatas joined KIPP Academy Lynn as COO in January 2011 to support its growth to a Massachusetts region of public charter schools. He brings 20 years of experience leading mission-driven organizations to greater impact, sustainability, and scale. Prior to KIPP, John served as Portfolio Manager at the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, which invests in organizations serving low-income youth. At City Year, Inc., a national service and education organization, John served as a Regional Director and as Director of Strategic Planning & Organizational Development. John has also worked as a nonprofit consultant with KublerWirka, a corporate fundraiser at the Harvard Development Office, and a Senior Associate at the Duke and Harvard centers for social entrepreneurship. A member of Outward Bound's National Board of Advisors, John is a graduate of Tufts University, Harvard Business School, and the National Outdoor Leadership School. He resides in Arlington, MA with his wife Karen and daughter Becca.

Ms. DeAngelo holds a Bachelor's degree in mathematical sciences from Colby College. She is the Founding School Leader of KAL Collegiate High School which opened in August 2011. She began her teaching career in 2003 as a Teach for America corps member in Phoenix, AZ, teaching math to 9th - 11th graders. During this time, she helped initiate the International Baccalaureate Program and served as the head girls' cross country coach and the JV girls' basketball coach. At KAL, she taught 7th grade math, and led both the 7th grade team and the math department. She also coaches the boys' KAL basketball team, who won the Charter School Cup tournament 2009 and 2010. Ms. DeAngelo's success as a math teacher was celebrated in the summer of 2009 when she was awarded the prestigious KIPP Excellence in Teaching Award. Ms. DeAngelo lives in Lynn.

Ms. Breen grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in Environmental Science. She began her teaching career in 1996 as a Teach for America corps member in Washington Heights, New York. After fulfilling her 2 year TFA commitment, she moved on to KIPP Academy in the Bronx, where she taught 7th and 8th grade science, math, and English for five years. She moved to Virginia and taught math and science in a public school for one year before moving back to Massachusetts in 2004 to help found KIPP Academy Lynn as the 5th grade math teacher. In 2006, Ms. Breen was promoted to the role of Assistant Principal of KAL, and recently took on the role of Principal. She lives in Lynn with her husband Nat and baby daughter Serena.

Ms. Stead has been at KIPP Lynn since 2005. Before joining KAL, she taught for two years in the 9th Ward in New Orleans at the middle and elementary levels after graduating from Tulane University. In her time at KAL, she has been lucky enough to work with all different grade levels in different subject areas, predominantly math. This year, she continues to teach 5th grade math problem solving, 6th grade math problem solving, is 8th grade team leader and is also serving as Assistant Principal for the KAL middle school. Emily loves getting to work with both big and small KIPPsters throughout her day and enjoys making learning fun whenever possible.

After graduating from Hampton University in Virginia, Mr. Brown served as an 8th grade middle school history teacher through 2006. He moved to Boston to join KAL as an 8th grade History teacher in 2007, served as the Director of Multicultural and Community Affairs, and recently moved into his current role as Assistant Principal. He dedicates his personal and professional life to improving the quality of life in inner city communities by educating the youth and motivating them to reach for the stars. He continues his mission of training young boys to be powerful, positive, and productive young men by advising an all-male honor society entitled "AMISTAD DE CABALLERO" meaning "Brotherhood of Gentlemen." Mr. Brown also holds a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Boston College. He lives in Melrose with his wife Camile and baby daughter Laila.

Mr. Jones graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in history. He spent 3 ½ years in rural Virginia running special-education programs at the middle and elementary school levels. He was a member of the founding staff at KAL, where he started as a sports and special education teacher. Since 2005, Mr. Jones has been teaching physical education full-time and coaching basketball. His varsity girls' basketball team was undefeated in league play in 2008, 2009, and 2010, and won the MA Charter School Basketball League tournament in 2008,2009, and 2010 as well as the Charter School Cup Invitational tournament in 2009 and 2010. Mr. Jones has served as the Dean of Students for KIPP Academy Lynn since 2007. He lives in Lynn with his wife Anna and baby daughter Serena.

Ms. Startek was raised in Oshawa, Ontario and graduated with Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Biology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She is entering her twelfth year teaching and her sixth year with KIPP MA. During her teaching career, Ms. Startek has mentored Science Fair students who have gone on to regional, state, and national competitions. She has also co-authored several published research papers on the smooth-billed ani, a communal-living species of cuckoo, and on the reconstruction of the population history of Puerto Rico.

Ms. Rosado was educated in the first class of KIPP Bronx. She attended Deerfield Academy on a full academic scholarship, and recently graduated from Brown University. She joined KIPP Lynn in 2009 as the Director of KIPP Through College, where she can apply her experience of being a KIPP alumna to helping our alumni in their transition to and through high school and college.

Joan joined the KIPP Lynn team in 2006. Her background involves working with culturally diverse and at-risk children and adolescents in a variety of settings including outpatient, residential and middle/high school levels. She also has experience with on-call crisis intervention, providing supervision for staff, vocational counseling, and coordinating all social services in multi-cultural settings.

Mr. Besthoff joined the KAL Board in the Spring of 2010. He is a general partner with Castile Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm in the Boston area, where he focuses on investments in emerging Internet and software companies. During his career, Mr. Besthoff has held multiple positions as a developer, strategist and investor in technology-oriented companies. He was previously a principal at Rho Ventures and started his career at Accenture. He is a graduate of Hamilton College and the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, and lives in Carlisle, MA with his wife and two children.

Ms. Boudreau has served on the KAL Board for over three years. Most recently, she was Director of Investor Relations for New Profit Inc., a national venture philanthropy fund that provides financial and strategic resources for social entrepreneurs seeking to scale their innovations across the country. In this role, her primary responsibility was to ensure New Profit's investors (donors) were well informed of the current activities of New Profit and its portfolio organizations. Prior to New Profit, Ms. Boudreau served in fundraising positions at Babson College and Providence College and as a manager for a venture capital firm. She lives in Newton with her husband Patrick, and their son PJ and daughter Margaret.

Ms. Davis was one of the first Board members of the KIPP Academy Lynn Board and continues to serve as Assistant Board Chair. In 2007, Ms. Davis became the President and CEO of the National Center on Time & Learning (NCTL), an organization dedicated to expanding and modernizing the American school calendar to meet the needs of student in the 21st Century. Prior to that, Ms. Davis was co-founder and president of Massachusetts 2020, an education organization dedicated to expanding learning opportunities for children across Massachusetts. For the last twenty years, she has held numerous positions at the federal, state and local levels focused on improving educational opportunities for children across the United States. Her previous positions have included U.S. Department of Education Deputy Assistant Secretary; Special Assistant to U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley; Special Assistant to the Executive Director of the National Governors Association; and the Executive Director of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's after-school learning initiative. Ms. Davis lives in Lynn, MA with her husband and daughter.

Mr. Fredell has served as KIPP Academy Lynn's Board Chair for three years. He is the co-founder and CEO of ForAllTime, LLC, which produces Membly.com (currently in BETA). Membly helps users easily capture, store and share memories about the people and things they love through web browser, iPhone or iPad. Memories are stored in Digital Lockets™ and can be pictures, a note, video, a poem, a text message, status update...anything one might want to save about a person. Prior to ForAllTime, he developed the first software-as-a-service for managing mergers & acquisitions, which was acquired by IntraLinks. At IntraLinks, he was part of the executive team that grew the company from $4mm to $150mm in revenue and ultimately a successful IPO. Mr. Fredell holds two patents and has authored several technology books. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the Wharton School at UPenn, and lives in Sherborn, MA with his wife and children.

Ms. Goldman has been involved in KIPP Academy Lynn for nearly four years, and has served on the Board for the past three. She is a partner in Plan B Ventures, providing funding to emerging Cleantech companies. She is the co-founder and former Executive Director of Friends of Yemin Orde, the US support organization for the Yemin Orde Youth Village in Israel, home to more than 500 disadvantaged youth. Barbara has also served as Director of Development at Cohen Hillel Academy, and has been active in a variety of North Shore community organizations. She holds a B.S. in Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from NYU School of Law. Ms. Goldman is a resident of Marblehead, MA.

Mr. Kendall is currently serving his third year on the KAL Board. He is a partner in Goodwin Procter LLP's Private Equity and Technology Companies Group, and focuses his corporate finance and securities practice on private equity and venture capital transactions, mergers and acquisitions, public securities offerings and representing emerging growth companies. He advises a variety of companies in industries including software, information technology, telecommunications, information services, biotechnology, healthcare, financial services, and retail. Mr. Kendall is listed in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business, The Best Lawyers in America, Boston's Best Lawyers, and has been recognized as a Massachusetts "Super Lawyer." Mr. Kendall is a graduate of Boston University School of Law and Boston University Graduate School of Management. Mr. Kendall resides in Dover, MA with his wife and children.

Ms. McLaughlin joined the KAL Board in the Spring of 2010. She currently holds the position of Chief Operating Officer at Education Pioneers, and has extensive management experience in for-profit, and non-profit organizations. Prior to joining Education Pioneers, Frances was a Senior Director at the Broad Foundation, a Los Angeles-based venture philanthropy firm. At Broad, she was responsible for the foundation's investments in organizations which build leadership capacity in public education. Ms. McLaughlin previously served as Executive Vice President of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), a nonprofit organization and market leader in the fields of study abroad and international student exchange. In addition to developing new business activities, over the course of her ten years at CIEE, she also served as Chief Operating Officer of the organization's largest division, managing operations in Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States. Prior to CIEE, she was the Director of North American Marketing and Sales for the EF International Language Schools, and also worked as a Regional Director for Teach for America. Frances has a Bachelor's degree in history and art history and an Executive Management Certificate from Columbia University. Frances lives in Amesbury, MA, with her husband, Will, and daughter, Georgia.

Mr. Sanders joined the KAL Board in Spring 2010 and is a Director at Bain Capital, a global investment firm. Prior to joining Bain Capital, he was an associate Partner at McKinsey & Company's Palo Alto office, where his client work focused on strategy/growth and corporate finance. His professional experience also includes positions in sales management and with other consulting firms. Nathan received an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School and a BS in MIS and Entrpreneurship from the University of Arizona. In addition, he is actively involved with Social Venture Partners and Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. When not spending time with his family, Nathan enjoys cycling, cooking, and exploring New England.

Mr. Sarazen has served on the KAL Board for four years and currently leads the Facilities Committee. He is the Global Life Sciences Markets Leader for Ernst & Young, managing the firm's global marketing, communication and go-to-market strategies for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medtech industries. Scott has enjoyed over 20 years of experience working directly and indirectly in the life science industries. Prior to joining EY, his career included roles with Straumann, North America and Genzyme Corporation. Scott has also served in public economic development roles, advocating for the expansion of the biomedical industries for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and as a consultant to the City of Boston. He serves on the board of advisors for the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and is active with the Mass Biotechnology Council. He was named one of Boston's 40 under 40 Business leaders by Boston Business Journal. Mr. Sarazen is a resident of Marblehead, MA.

Ms. Seider joined the KAL Board in 2011. She is currently a Managing Director of Alumni Affairs for Teach For America, an organization that seeks to improve educational opportunities for low-income students by training a talented force of teachers who, as alumni, will work from all sectors to fight educational inequity. Here in Massachusetts, she works to catalyze the impact of nearly 1,000 local alumni of the program, leveraging her extensive experience in leadership development, strategic partnerships, and network building. Ms. Seider began her career as a Teach For America corps member in Atlanta, where she was a fourth grade teacher. She is a native of Dorchester, and a graduate of Boston Public Schools. She holds an AB from Harvard College, and a Master's Degree in Anthropology from Emory University. Ms. Seider lives in Cambridge, MA with her husband, Scott.
