KIPP to College

When a student enters a KIPP school in fifth grade, the students, parents and teachers make a promise to successfully “climb the mountain to college.” An important step on that journey is attending a college-preparatory high school that maximizes the academic potential of each student and supports their interests, talents, and ambitions. At KIPP, we firmly believe that the high school selection process is an important factor in determining which students will attend and succeed in college. KIPP Academy Lynn takes seriously its responsibility to help families with the high school selection process; a process that can be complex and appear unattainable for some families due to lack of awareness, language barriers, geography, tuition costs and fees, or test preparation.

Beginning in the fifth grade and becoming more intensive by the eighth grade, students begin to learn about the range of high school options available, visit schools, meet with admissions representatives, and hear from KIPP alumni about their high school choices and experiences. The seventh and eighth grade years are spent developing a list of schools of interest, preparing for placement examinations, developing essay writing and interview skills and, finally, making application to schools that are a “good match” for each student. Assisting families with financial aid and scholarship applications is also an essential component of the placement process.

As students transition into high school programs, the KIPP to College Program continues to provide the academic support services and programs, advising, extra-curricular activities, and career counseling needed to ensure our students reach their goal of attending and graduating from college.
